Introduction

This guide covers Tier 1 and higher ships (Epheria ships, Guild Galley and the Carrack). If you are looking for more basic information, such as how to craft a basic fishing boat then you can find this in our Ships Starter Guide. Also check out our Bartering Guide if you are looking for informtion on upgrading to an Epheria Caravel or Galleass

There are lots of different types of ships in Black Desert Online and each has a different tier. Tier 1 or higher ships can have ship skills and also have their own UI and uses other than just transportation. Tier 0 ships will also be destroyed when they run out of durability, whilst Tier 1 and higher ships can be repaired at a Wharf Manager.

Tier 1 and above ships also have the following stats:
  • Durability – This is the HP of the ship. You can repair the durability using Ship Repair Material.
  • Rations – This is the stamina of the ship. As the ship moves, rations will decrease. You can refill your rations at a Wharf Manager or by searching for supplies at an island
  • Max Weight Limit – This is the amount of weight your ship can carry in the storage
  • Speed – This is the base speed of your ship
  • Accel – This is the starting speed of your ship when you first move
  • Turn – This is the turn speed of your ship
  • Brake – This is the stopping speed of your ship
  • Inventory Slots – This is how many inventory slots your ship has. You can only add/remove items into the ship storage at a Wharf Manager
  • Cabins – This is the amount of cabin space your ship has. Some sailors will require multiple cabin slots
  • Cannons – This is the amount of cannons on the ship

Ships allow the player to travel through the rivers and oceans of BDO independently, without the need of a NPC ferry. Acquiring these ships can be done two ways, buying them off the auction house or crafting. As the ships get larger, more materials and effort are required to construct them.

Cog [Tier 1]:

The Cog ship is a newer “fishing boat” and can be crafted at the shipyard in Port Epheria (Shipyard 3-5, 2F). You are also rewarded with a free Cog ship when you complete the main sailing quest. The ship has the Breezy Sail skill by default but CANNOT be repaired as well as having low HP. The ship does not have any cabins and therefore cannot hold any crew members.

Bartali Sailboat [Tier 1]:

The Bartali Sailboat is a cheap ship that can be bought in Velia for 10 million silver. The ship is similar to the Old Bartali Sailboat but CAN be repaired. You can also purchase equipment for this ship from Philaberto Falasi at Port Epheria and enhance them like other ship equipment. This ship CANNOT use ship skills. You can also upgrade the Dancing Marlin to an Epheria Sailboat/Frigate.

Ship UI

All T1 or higher ships now have a new UI when you board them. There are a few key changes which are important to note.

Currents and Wind

Firstly, ocean currents and wind have been added. These affect your ship speed, which can be seen on your new ship UI. The numbers show the current strength of the wind/current, and the arrows around the border show their direction. Ideally, you want to have both arrows at the bottom to get the maximum ship speed. Going against the wind/current will cause you to go very slowly and may even make your boat go backwards if they are too strong.

Currents do not change and depend completely on your position in the sea. There are also no currents near the land. Wind however, can change at any time and becomes stronger the further out you are. The wind icon will change colour depending on its strength.

Ship Rations and Emergancy Rations

Also, the “power” stat has been changed to ship rations on all boats and will now run out quicker. Rations are consumed when the boat is moving and will drain quicker when you use your ship skills or when you use island interactions. When you run out of ship rations, your boat will move much slower and may not even move at all if you are going against the wind/current. You are also unable to use ship skills if you run out of rations.

To restore your ship rations, you need to go to a wharf manager and refuel the ship. You can also get your ship crew to gather supplies from islands for the chance to restore a small amount of your ship rations. It’s also important to note that you are now unable to restore rations on T2 and T3 using the Breezy Crystal (item will still be consumed).

If you are unable to restore the ship rations you can use Emergancy Rations. This is done using consumable foods. The higher grade the food is, the more rations it will give your ship. Whilst on your ship, press P to open the Ship info window and then click the + (plus) symbol next to rations. You can now select a food to use and the quantity you would like to use (similar to feeding workers).

Item Grade Emergancy Rations
White 80
Green 100
Blue 240
Yellow 4000
Orange 22000

Cannons

Cannons on T2 or T3 ships can no longer be mounted by a player. Your ship will now automatically store a certain amount of cannon balls when you refuel them at a wharf manager (300 for Epheria Caravel, 600 for Epheria Galleass). This means you do not need to buy cannonballs for your T2 or T3 ships but if you run out of cannon balls you will need to go back to the wharf manager to restock.

The cannons are now controlled using LMB and RMB. LMB will fire all the cannons on the left side of your ship, and RMB will fire all the cannons on your right side. So if your ship has 4 cannons on each side, you will fire all 4 cannons on that side and use a total of 4 cannon balls. The cooldown for your cannons is shared so you cannot fire both sides at the same time. However, there is a new ship skill which will give you a seperate cooldown for each side.

Another important thing to note is that T2 and T3 cannons will not be as effective against vell. This means that using your T1 ship (Epheria Sailboat/Frigate) will be better against vell.

Gear and Inventory Management

Finally, Equipment and your ship inventory can no longer be used when you are out in the ocean. This means you will not be able to store items directly in your ship inventory any more and you must instead go to a wharf manager to deposit/withdraw items or ship gear from your boat. However, you can now move items directly from your town storage into your ship (if you are at a wharf manager in a town). In addition, if your ship is destroyed, all cargo on the ship will be destroyed as well.

Epheria Sailboat

The Epheria Sailboat is faster than the fishing boat and is also equipped with 2 cannons. You use Cannon Ball for Ship to use the cannons on the ship. The sailboat is repairable and you can also use your workers on the ship. The sailboat requires a lot of materials to build and can only be built in Epheria at the level 3 Shipyard > 2nd Floor, No. 3-5, Epheria. It will take at least 15 days to gather the materials and you should use as many goblin workers as you can to process the materials quickly.

What you will need

You will need the following materials:
  • Design: Epheria Sailboat x20 – This item is only available through quest rewards. There is a daily quest you can get from Philaberto Falasi in Epheria. There are also weekly fishing quests in Valencia (Professional Fishing or higher required) and the Margoria questline gives x3 Design: Epheria Sailboat.
  • Steel x600 – Steel is created by heating Melted Iron Shard x5 and Coal x5. You will need knowledge of Heating: Beginner.
  • Flax Fabric x300 – Flax Fabric is obtained by heating Flax to create Flax Thread, then grinding Flax Thread x10. It requires knowledge of Grinding: Beginner.
  • Standardized Timber Square x800 – This item can be obtained by processing Usable Scantling x10. If you have knowledge of Wood Chopping: Beginner, it is also obtainable by chopping logs.

Epheria Caravel

The Epheria Caravel is a new T2 ship which can only be made by upgrading an Epheria Sailboat. The Epheria Caravel has the following stats:

To upgrade the Epheria Sailboat into an Epheria Caravel, you will need to first check the Epheria Sailboat into a wharf at the wharf manager. You will then be able to select the upgrade option from the menu. You can also upgrade an Epheria Sailboat to an Improved Epheria Sailboat, but the upgrade is not that good because it doesn’t give you extra stats and only gives you the ability to use your cannons from your wheel. I would recommend skipping that upgrade and going straight to the Caravel.

You will need the materials below to upgrade the ship into an Epheria Caravel.
You can get a good amount of these materials simply by completing Ravina’s Ship Upgrade Log. More information about this can be found in our Bartering guide.

Epheria Frigate

The Epheria Frigate is faster than the fishing boat and is also equipped with 4 cannons. You use Cannon Ball for Ship to use the cannons on the ship. Unlike the other ships, the frigate is repairable and you can also use your workers on the ship. The frigate requires a lot of materials to build and can only be built in Epheria at the level 3 Shipyard > 2nd Floor, No. 3-5, Epheria. It will take at least 20 days to gather the materials and you should use as many goblin workers as you can to process the materials quickly. The frigate is harder to craft than the Epheria Sailboat and honestly there isn’t a huge difference between them apart from the number of cannons. It also has less inventory slots and weight limit.

What you will need

You will need the following materials:
  • Design: Epheria Frigate x25 – This item is only available through quest rewards. There is a daily quest you can get from Philaberto Falasi in Epheria. This is done by chopping Pine Timber x5 to create Pine Planks, then chopping the Pine Planks x5 again to create Pine Plywood. It can also be obtained when chopping Pine Timber if you have knowledge of Chopping: Beginner. You will then need coconuts which can be gathered in Valencia. Use 10 coconuts and 1 Pine Plywood to craft a Plated Pine Plywood. You will need Heating: Skilled knowledge to craft them. They are also availalbe from various daily quests in Kamaslyvia.
  • Enhanced Flax Fabric x450 – Enhanced Flax Fabric requires you to first craft Flax Fabric. This is done by heating Flax x5 then grinding Flax Thread x10 (requires Grinding: Beginner). You will also need Shining Powder which can be created using Alchemy. Use 1 Flax Fabric and 1 Shining Powder to craft an Enhanced Flax Fabric. You will need Grinding: Skilled knowledge to craft them. They are also availalbe from various daily quests in Kamaslyvia.
  • Standardized Timber Square x1000 – This item can be obtained by processing Usable Scantling x10. If you have knowledge of Wood Chopping: Beginner, it is also obtainable by chopping logs.
  • Jade Coral Ingot x800 – Jade Coral Ingots require you to first craft Melted Titanium Shards. This is done by heating Titanium Ore x5 (requires Heating: Beginner). You will also need Prairie Green Coral which requires 3 Gren Corals and 1 Resplendent Emerald to craft. Use 5 Melted Titanium Shards and 1 Prairie Green Coral to craft a Jade Coral Ingot. You will need Heating: Skilled knowledge to craft them. They are also availalbe from a daily quest in Kamaslyvia and other Kamaslyvia story quests.
Once you’ve created the ship you will have a Ship Registration: Epheria Frigate and you can register it at a wharf just like any other ship.

Equipment

All equipment can be enhanced using Black Stone (Armor) to enhance to +5, then Concentrated Magical Black Stone (Armor) to enhance up to +10. If the enhancement fails from +5 and up, the level will go down by 1. List of equipment you can buy from Dock Managers:

Guild Galley

The Galley is a guild ship which can be used by officers or the guild master. Galleys have 4 cannons on each side and can only be built at certain guild housing or by completing the quest [Guild] I have a Dream. You use [Guild] Cannon Ball for Ship to use the cannons on the ship, these are sold at a guild Wharf NPC. Unlike the other ships, the galley is repairable and you can also use workers on the ship for additional stats.

What you will need

To begin, you will need the following guild skills (total of 17 skill points):
  • Building Boat Lv. 1 – This skill will allow you to craft the ship registration. The skill costs 10 guild skill points.
  • Building Boat Lv. 2 – This skill will allow you to craft blue grade ship parts. The skill costs 2 guild skill points.
  • Fully Prepared – This skill will allow you to craft the item [Guild] Origin of Wind. The skill costs 5 guild skill points.
You will also need the following materials: Finally, you will need one of the following guild houses:
  • Guild House – Olvia
  • Guild House – Velia
  • No. 1, Guild House – Altinova
  • No. 2. Guild House – Altinova
These are currently the only Guild houses that allow you to craft a galley. For more information on guild housing, click here to view our guide The total guild funds required to buy all the materials is 205,930,000 silver. Therefore, I would recommend gathering as many materials as you can before bidding on a guild house. Once you have everything listed above, place the materials into the guild bank and go to the guild house crafting window by clicking on the guild house from you map. You can send a maximum of 200 workers to work on the ship at once. Only one ship can be crafted per day, with a total of three ships available per guild.

Ship Stats

Weight Limit: 4,000 LT Durability (HP): 1,000,000 Lifespan (Stamina/Power): 1,000,001 Inventory Slots: 5 Acceleration: 100% Speed: 100% Turn: 100% Brake: 100% As mentioned in the introduction, the Galley can be repaired and it also has the “Power” stat, unlike other ships. It has HP which is repairable using Ship Repair Material, crafted by chopping Plywood (any) x2. Using this will recover 5,000 HP and it does not have a cooldown, but takes 30 seconds to apply the heal. If the boat’s HP reaches 0 it will disappear and can be recovered at the Wharf. It’s Lifespan (Stamina/Power) depletes when sailing, similar to other mounts such as horses. If the boat’s lifespan reaches 0 the boat will move significantly slower. You can use the [Guild] Breezy Crystal item, which is bought from guild Wharf NPCs, to recover 10% of the Max Power. This is instant but has a cooldown of 60 minutes. You can also craft a more powerful version of this item called the [Guild] Origin of Wind. This item recovers 50% of the Max Power and only has a 30 minute cooldown. The recipe is: [Guild] Breezy Crystal x2, [Guild] Sticky Glue x2, [Guild] Sea Monster’s Neidan x2.

All equipment can be enhanced using Black Stone (Armor) to enhance to +5, then Concentrated Magical Black Stone (Armor) to enhance up to +10. If the enhancement fails from +5 and up, the level will go down by 1. List of equipment you can buy from Guild Wharf NPCs:

Enhancing Ship Gear

Enhancing the new ship gear requires new items that come with the Great Ocean expansion update.

Green Gear
icon Enhancing green gear requires the item Verdant Black Stone.
Blue Gear
icon Enhancing from +0 to +5 you will need to use the item Fiery Black Stone
This is obtained as an item drop from the new guild boss “Kahn” and can be obtained by bartering level 3 barter items.

Ship Skills

Ship skills are only available on the Epheria Sailboat, Epheria Frigate and Guild Galley. You will need a certain level of sailing skill to use special skills. Skills also use up your ships power stat.
Sailing Skill Skill Name What it does How to use it
Beginner 1 Ram Travels forwards for 5 seconds and rams into targets to damage them. Stops the ship for 2 seconds afterwards. Q
Apprentice 1 Power Accel. Use whilst the ship is standing still to quickly accelerate for 8 seconds then return to the ships maximum speed. SPACE + W
Skilled 1 Breezy Sail Accelerate the ship for 10 seconds then returns the ship to it’s maximum speed. SHIFT + W
Professional 1 Swift Retreat Quickly reverse the ship S
Artisan 1 Abrupt Turn Quickly turn on the spot S+ A/D
Master 1 Smooth Turn Quickly turn whilst moving A/D
Guru 1 Bullseye Shortens cannon reloading time Passive
The sailing lifeskill can be leveled by sailing an Epheria Sailboat, Epheria Frigate or Guild Galley through the Margoria Sea, Vadabin Sea or Juur Sea. Currently the fastest way to level your sailing lifeskill is by completing the daily quest from Sihuram at Port Ratt. You must deliver a quest item to either Velia, Epheria, Ancado or Altinova depending on which of the daily quest you decide to do. You can only do one of them and I would advise on taking the Ancado quest because it gives the most EXP due to the distance you are travelling. I would advise on sailing to Epheria then getting on your horse to travel the rest of the way. The daily quest does not require you to use or have one of the Margoria ships and you can take the ferry instead. There are also Silver Embroidered Sailor’s Clothes which will give you higher sailing EXP and can be enhanced for a higher EXP gain. You can also use food such as Sute Tea to gain more life EXP while sailing.

Sailors and Crew Management

Introduction to Crew Members

Crew members are used on T2 and T3 ships to perform certain actions such as pillaging for resources on an island or using the new bartering system. Each crew member has their own level and stats and can be leveled up by killing sea monsters to increase their stats. Crew members can go up to a maximum of level 10 and can gain exp by killing sea monsters.

Hiring Crew Members

To begin hiring crew members, you must first complete a the “[The Great Expedition] Oquilla’s Eye” questline from your Black Spirit which will introduce you to bartering. The questline will give you a free crew member and will also give you increase the amount your sailor slots.

You can have a maximum of 20 sailor slots. To gain more sailor slots after completing the questline, you will need to buy the “Captain’s Medallion” item from the pearl store:
  • Pearl Store (F3) > Function > Captain’s Medallion – 500 pearls each (maximum of 14 purchases)
Once you’ve completed the questline, you will need to buy a crew member contract. This costs 3 million silver and can be bought from the innkeeper Islin Bartali in Velia, from Philaberto Falasi in Port Epheria or Criox at Velia docks.

You must then find a sailor to hire.
Sailors are found in these locations:
  • Velia – inside the Inn around the tables
  • Port Epheria –  along the beach near the whale
  • Iliya Island –  along the harbor and up the road
You can now attempt to hire a sailor, if you fail to hire them, the contract is consumed and the sailor will walk away from you. You cannot attempt to hire the same sailor for a certain period of time (1 day or more). If you are successful, the sailor will now join your crew and can be assigned to a ship at the wharf manager.

Managing your Crew

Some crew members will demand more cabins and this may limit the amount of crew members you can have on your ship. If you run out of Rations on your ship, your crew members will start to lose condition. If a crew member runs out of Condition, they will no longer do any actions on your ship and their stats will no longer apply. They must be fed a new food item called Chowder to recover. Sailors also drop to 0 Condition if you Remote Collect your ship, or if your ship is destroyed.

Sailors can also become sick. To cure a sick Sailor you must use an Elixir of Regeneration, which is made using Simple Alchemy.

The recipe for Chowder is below:
  • Dried Pearl Oyster Flesh x1
  • Pepper x2
  • Smoked Pork x2
  • Milk x1
  • Teff Bread x1

The recipe for Elixir of Regeneration is below:
  • Mandragora Essence x1
  • Essence of Magic Power x1
  • Oil of Regeneration x1
  • Troll Blood x2
  • Grape x4

Sailor Stats and Types of Sailors

Sailors have stats that can increase your ship’s Speed, Acceleration, Turn, and Brake.

Sailor Stats which increase your Ship Stats:

  • Endurance – Increases your ship Speed
  • Wits – Increases your ship Acceleration
  • Awareness – Increases your ship Turn
  • Strength – Increases your ship Brake

Sailors also have other stats:

  • Weight
    • Sailors have a weight when they are added to your ship. Giants weigh 500 LT, Goblins are usually 100 – 200 LT,  Dwarves are 300 LT and Humans are around 200 – 300 LT.
  • Appetite
    • Sailor Appetite is how often you will need to feed them Chowder
  • Condition
    • This is the Sailors current condition. Sailors with 0 Condition have a chance to become sick. Condition can randomly decrease whilst you are at sea and after using Explore.
  • Patience/Force/Focus/Vision
    • These stats improve your cannons in different ways. Patience increases your ships cannon reload speed. Force will improve the cannon range when using FocusFire, Focus will improve the accuracy and reduce the spread of the cannons and Vision improves the angle of your cannons. Only certain types of sailors can have these stats.
  • Exp
    • Sailors gain EXP slowly through bartering and will gain more EXP when you kill sea monsters.
    • The amount of EXP the sailor gains depends on the number of Sailors on the ship.
    • For example: if you have 7 sailors then you would get 160% more EXP and each sailor would get 22% of that EXP each.
      • 1 Sailor: 100% EXP
      • 2–3 Sailors: 120% EXP (60% / 40% each)
      • 4–5 Sailors: 140% EXP (35% / 28% each)
      • 6–7 Sailors: 160% EXP (27% / 22% each)
      • 8–10 Sailors: 180% EXP (22.5% / 20% / 18% each)

When you hire a sailor you can see the type of sailor on the name tag above their head. Below is a table showing the base stats each type of sailor can have. As the sailor levels up it will gain better stats.

The best sailors you can get for Bartering is the Innocent Sailors.

The components of the boat (upgrades) can be upgraded with Blackstones, they also have a seperate lifetime to the boat so you can take them off and on whenever you want. It’s like adding a saddle to a horse!

Do the components of boats (e.g. Fishing Boat Prow) that can be upgraded with Black Stones have a lifespan like boats? If not, do they have durability and how are they repaired?

(Off-topic: Also components for wagons, like wheels… do they have the same behaviour or no?)
