Pets guide

Introduction

Pets can be bought from the Pearl Store by pressing (F3) then going to the pet tab. Pets will follow your character around and pick up loot for you automatically. All tier pets pick up one item every 10 seconds within a 10 meter radius. Pets also have special commands and skills to help aid you on your adventure.

Once you’ve bought the pet of your choice you will need to register it! To do this, simply go to your inventory (I) then the Pearl Store tab. Right-click the token and enter your pets name. You will then gain a pet icon in the top left corner which is used to control your pets.

Get your pets out by clicking the pet icon to open the pet window. Next, click the box icon next to your pet. The paw (?) icon will open your pets information.

The pet will automatically follow you around and pick up items for you. To command your pet, right-click the pet icon then click your pet. Here you can toggle (on/off) the follow command, loot command and special command.

To put your pet away again, click the pet icon then “check in all”.

When you buy a pet you will also receive Nutritious Feed x20 which is a cash shop item that recovers your pets hunger. You can buy more from the pearl store or craft/buy food in-game. Check out the hunger section of this guide (below) for more details.

In the Pearl Store (F3) you can also buy a cat or dog bed to place in your house.

Pets cannot die.

Differences between species

Each species has a hunger bar of 200 and loot speeds of:

  • 10 seconds at tier 1
  • 7.5 seconds at tier 2
  • 6.5 seconds at tier 3 and 4

There is also a theory going around that the Hawk pets actually pick up slightly slower due to the increased distance between them and the loot.

Another difference between pets is their special skills:

  • Cats – detects gathering resources in your vicinity
  • Dogs – detects a flagged player in your vicinity
  • Birds – marks elite mobs in your vicinity with a beam of light
  • Penguins – increases auto fishing speed
  • Desert Fox – reduces heatstroke/hypothermia debuff in the desert
  • Hedgehog – auto gathering
  • Panda/Red Panda – taunts monsters
  • Polar Bear – increases auto fishing speed
  • Snowkid – reduces heatstroke/hypothermia debuff in the desert
  • Cursed Looney – marks elite mobs in your vicinity with a beam of light
  • Cushy Mallowmerz/Drifty Ghosphy/Wizard Gosphy  – taunts monsters

For more information on skills read the skill section below.

Levels

When you use your pet its hunger bar will go down, as you feed your pet, it will gain experience and level up. Higher tier pets require more experience to level up. Higher levels will decrease the pickup time, making your pets loot speed faster. Tier 1 pets can go from a speed of 10 seconds at level 1, to 4 seconds at level 10.

The maximum level for pets is currently level 10.

Skills

Below is a table of all the OLD skills a pet could have (updated list below):

NEW LIST OF PET SKILLS

  • Common (all pets can obtain these skills)
    • Luck +1
    • Combat Experience Increase +5%
    • HP Recover Increase
  • Livestock (dogs, cats, etc.)
    • Cooking Experience Increase +5%
    • Alchemy Experience Increase +5%
    • Worker Experience Increase +5%
    • Life Experience Increase +5%
  • Birds (hawks, long-tailed tit, etc.)
    • Fishing +1
    • Fishing Experience Increase +5%
    • Hunting Experience Increase +5%
    • Taming Experience Increase +5%
    • Trading Experience Increase +5%
  • Wildlife (hedgehog, desert fox, etc.)
    • Gathering +1
    • Gathering Experience Increase +5%
  • Monster (snowman, etc.)
    • Gathering +1
    • Gathering Experience Increase +5%

Death penalty reduction skills can no longer be obtained by breeding. (Existing skill effects will remain intact.)

These skills act like a permanent buff which will only take effect when the pet is checked out. Tier 1 pets do have skills but will only gain them when they reach level 10.

These skills are stackable, for example if your pet has 4 of the Combat Experience +5% skills, you will receive a Combat Experience +20% buff. However this only applies to the same pet and will not stack across all pets.

  • Tier 1 – one skill
  • Tier 2 –  one skill
  • Tier 3 – two skills
  • Tier 4 – three skills

In my opinion, the best skills for grinding are combat experience +7% and luck +1.

Each species also has a “special skill” when you buy them:

You can toggle the special skill (on/off) at any time by right-clicking the pet icon, left-clicking your pet, then clicking the command.

Hunger

kXWE1R0As you use your pet, it’s hunger level will gradually go down. When your pet hunger is getting low, the pet icon will flash red and your pet will not pick up loot or perform it’s skills and special skill. It will however, still follow your character.

To recover your pets hunger level, you can feed them pet food.

Below is a table showing each type of pet food, how to get them and the amount of hunger they will restore. Good Food and Organic Food can be crafted using a Cooking Utensil, which is bought from a cooking merchant and must be placed in your house to use. For help with these recipes check out our recipes list.

5fxYluk

Once you have the pet food, right click the item in your inventory to feed your pets.

PICK UP BEHAVIOUR OPTIONS

You can change the pick up speed to three different options:
  • Normal – the default behaviour setting
  • Swift – items will be picked up more quickly but pet hunger will deplete faster too
  • Cautious – items will be picked up more slowly but pet hunger will deplete slower too

Exchanging Pets and Tiers

The maximum tier of pets is currently tier 4. Higher tier pets have a faster looting speed and higher hunger level, as well as appearance changes.

Breeding/Exchanging is currently the only way to increase the Tier of your pet.

Important things to note:

  • Breeding pets will destroy the parents, so you will only keep the newly made pet.
  • You can not undo an exchange/breeding.
  • The Tier of the new pet is decided randomly and there is no guarantee that your new pet will have a higher Tier than the parents.
  • Higher pet levels have more of a chance of getting a higher tier.
  • You can not exchange pets that are more than 1 Tier apart. For example you can exchange a Tier 1 pet with a Tier 2 pet, but not a Tier 1 pet with a Tier 3 pet.
  • Your pet’s special skill may change after exchanging it.
  • You can only breed pets that are the same species. You can see the species marked in red on the pets Item Information.

To open the exchange window, click your pet icon then “Exchange”. Click the add icon next to the two pets you want to exchange.

It is also possible to choose the “Transferable” skill option and choose to keep the appearance. Allowing you to copy over the skills of one parent pet and the appearance of one parent pet.

  1. Select which appearance of the two pets you want to keep, and which of the two pet’s skills you want to keep. If the offspring advances in tiers and gains an additional skill slot the slot will be filled with one random skill.
  2. You can choose to not keep any appearance/skills with the buttons “Not transfer appearance” and “Not transfer skill”. This will give you a random appearance and random skills.  You will see a preview of what your new pet will look like and the skills it will have.

For the best chances of getting a tier 4 pet, exchange a tier 2 and tier 3. Make sure both pets are level 10 with at least 60%. Levels do play a factor when breeding pets, but it is completely RNG.

  • T1 +T1 = T2 or T3
  • T2 + T2 = T2 or T3
  • T2 + T3 = T3 or T4
  • T3 + T3 = T3 or T4
  • T3 + T4 = T3 or T4

POLAR BEAR PET

The Polar Bear pet was introduced and is only obtainable by referring a friend. You can purchase a starter package for $10 and then gift the code to a friend. If your friend reaches level 30 then you will be able to pick between 1000 pearls or the Polar Bear pet. The pet is not obtainable any other way and increases your weight limit. You can only use the refer a friend a maximum of 10 times.

  • Polar Bear Tier 1 Auto-fishing time reduced Weight Limit Increase +20LT
  • Polar Bear Tier 2 Auto-fishing time reduced Weight Limit Increase +20LT
  • Polar Bear Tier 3 Auto-fishing time reduced Weight Limit Increase +30LT
  • Polar Bear Tier 3 Auto-fishing time reduced Weight Limit Increase +40LT
  • Polar Bear Tier 3 Auto-fishing time reduced Weight Limit Increase +40LT
  • Polar Bear Tier 4 Auto-fishing time reduced Weight Limit Increase +50LT
  • Polar Bear Tier 4 Auto-fishing time reduced Weight Limit Increase +50LT

The species-traits (gathering detection, etc.) can change when exchanging pets. For instance, my cat lost its ability to detect gathering items, and instead learned the ability to taunt monsters.

Further, the skills I’ve been able to acquire on my cats and dogs in the NA client include: Processing, Alchemy, Farming, Trading, Cooking, Karma Recovery, Fishing, and Training. So the skills don’t seem to be exclusive to the species/breed of animal, although I haven’t had any animals yet with the gathering buff/increase.

Sorry for the confusion. There are technically 4 tiers in our guide. But we call the first one “Base tier (tier 0)” while other guides call it tier 1. This is to match bdobase.info/pets.

    There is Base Tier > Tier 1 > Tier 2 > Tier 3.

Right now your pet is at tier 2 in our guide, which is why it has 2 skills. When you get it to tier 3 (tier 4 in other guides), it should get an additional skill.

I’ll have a look at reworking the guide to make things less confusing.

    BDDatabase (http://bddatabase.net/us/pets/) also uses tier 0 – tier 3.

The desert fox pet should definately come with Valencia but otherwise it really depends on how quickly/slowly Daum want to release them in the cash shop. The breeding shouldn’t change with Valencia though because EU/NA had the breeding update earlier this year.

Okay, I’m rather confused by this information… Other guides have said we can reach pets to Tier 4, at which point they can receive 3 skills. This one says T3 is the highest and will grant 3 skills. I have already bread a pet to T3 and it has 2 skills…
Will this stuff change with the Valencia update?
Also, will new pets be available with the Valencia update?
I will be pissed off if my T3 pet doesn’t acquire a 3rd skill with a chance to be Luck +1 or combat EXP increase because I’ve never seen it proc for any of my pets. They seem to be stuck with “old” skills.

  • Apr 28, 2016 @ 22:18 pm

@Khamara It will require both. One is any meat but those two listed. the other has to be Chicken meat. For example: Lizard meat x5, Dried fish x4, chicken x4, and oatmeal x2.

  • Apr 25, 2016 @ 2:13 am

I’m a little confused about the pet food..

For the Organic one, you have it listed, “Any meat except Lizard or Chicken”, and then two ingredients later, you have Chicken meat listed?

Someone please unconfuse me.. Please!!! XD

    1. So penguins have increased auto fishing as a “special skill,” does that mean it is a passive effect for all penguins?

    2. So if I have three penguins, will that passive effect of increased auto fishing stack up?

    3. How I am understanding this from your guide is, I can have a penguin for the increased auto fishing passive effect, and the auto fishing speed +1 tier level skill for only one of the penguins since the same tier level skill does not stack up according to your guide.

    4. So if I wanted maximum fishing value, I should get three penguins with one of them having the auto fishing speed +1 tier level skill, and the other two possibly with luck and gathering (not sure if luck and gathering affects fishing loot).

“At least 60%” refers to the amount of experience the pet should have. You can get the pet up to a maximum of level 10 with 99.99%. We recommend doing that you have both pets at level 10 with 60% experience for the best results.

  • Feb 10, 2016 @ 15:45 pm

On the exchange what do u mean by “at least 60%”
