INTRODUCTION

Fishing is one of Black Desert Online’s many life skills that any player can participate in. Earlier to the western release of Black Desert Online there was a different fishing mechanic to how it is now. Previously fishing was profitable and did not require you to always be at the keyboard playing. But as the game developed, fishing became less and less profitable while away from the keyboard. The system we have now has some similarities but also vast differences to the original fishing system.
We still have the essential features of requiring a rod, waiting for fish to bite and then playing a small minigame. But if you wish to maximise your fishing profits you ought to look at the small details that will hopefully be presented within this guide.

GETTING STARTED

To get started just head over to any fisherman in your city and purchase a normal rod. These NPC’s can be found by searching for them using the NPC finder utility close to your minimap. Just select on the fish icon and your character will be directed towards the location of the NPC.

fishingNPC

Once you have a fishing rod, approach any source of water and while you have the rod equipped press space to cast your bait. If it was successful you will begin fishing and if not, your character will retract the bait. Once you have casted your line, wait until you have a bite and when your ready press space to start reeling. The game should tell you if you have a bite or not.

bite

Now comes the first phase of the minigame. In this phase you have to press space when the bar is within the blue region. The bar will fill and empty 3 times so you can take your time to get it right. If you succeed then you reach the last phase of the minigame. If you fail you have to re-cast your line and wait for another bite. You can obtain a perfect reel if you manage to press spacebar at the exact time that the bar is completely full. On a perfect reel, you get to skip the last part of the minigame and get your fish instantly.

nonperfect   perfect

The second and last phase of the minigame is when you just have to push the right buttons within the time given. The longer the sequence the better the fish you are reeling in!

2nd

After you have successfully completed all phases of the minigame you will receive a window with the fish you have just caught.
This is basically the essence of fishing with a rod. When you fish with a harpoon gun, a new minigame will be played. To learn more about harpoons just hop over to the harpoon section of this guide.
Once you have caught and received your fish, head over to a Trade Manager to sell your fish! These trade managers can be found by searching them with your NPC finder utility, much like how you found the fisherman.
To AFK fish, you just have to select the box where it says “Throw away useless items caught during auto-fishing” when you have your line out. Your character will automatically reel the catch in after 3 minutes of a bite.

FISHING LOOT

Fish rarity is consistent with the rarity types in Black Desert Online.

Trash
White fish ~ 200 Silver
Green Fish ~ 2000S Silver
Blue Fish ~ 5000 Silver
Yellow Fish ~ 20000
Orange Fish ~ 125,000 Silver

Once you catch a fish, it will have a 24 hour expiry date on them. The longer you leave them out the lower the price will get until you reach 0% of the price (24 hours exposure in total). It’s best to sell your fish within 1 hour of catching it or the price will gradually go down. If you’re out on a long trip and your fish will expire its best to dry them using processing (default “L” key). This way, the dry fish will retain its value indefinitely. The only problem is dried fish’s value is not much but at least it’s something where as if you let your fish expire you will get no return in price.
The ocean north of the map consists of several seas. Each sea generally preferred fish just like our oceans in real life. Some fish you can catch more of in some areas and less in others.
When harpoon fishing you can cannot catch any Trash. Also, you have the opportunity to catch fish that cannot be caught with a fishing rod. These fish include whales, sharks and large fish. If you are lucky enough to catch one of these giants they can sell up to 350,000 silver.

Example Catches:
⦁ Flying Fish – 5,040 silver
⦁ Killer Whale – 93,800 silver
⦁ Blue Shark – 84,000 silver
⦁ Saw Shark – 86,240 silver
⦁ Whale Shark – 88,200 silver
⦁ White Shark – 89,600 silver
⦁ Sperm Whale – 350,000 silver

You can also catch items that have value and are not fish (rods only).

Ancient Relic Fragment ~ 500,000 – 800,000 Silver (Auction House)
Silver Key ~ 200 Silver

relic

The Ancient Relic Fragments are very valuable and with 5 you can combine them to create a Lv.50 Ancient Relic Summon Scroll. These expire within 7 days so I don’t recommend combining them unless you are Lv.50 and are going to use them. I do recommended using them if you can find a group of 5 people at level 50. You will get more value out of using them than selling them on the market place.
Silver keys are used to open treasure chests that are located around Black Desert Online. These often reward you with Armour/Weapon Blackstones when opened.

MAXIMISING FISHING/FISHING LEVELS

To maximise the quality and quantity of fish caught within a set amount of time you need to have either high fishing level and/or maximum fishing ability.

The different tiers of levels are –
Beginner
Apprentice
Skilled
Professional
Artesian
Master
Guru
Fishing levels –
⦁ The higher the fishing skill, the faster and more likely you are to catch higher quality fish.
⦁ You will have the ability to use better rods.
⦁ You can do certain skill requirement quests.
⦁ You can see more “Seagull Hotspots” out in the ocean.
Fishing levels can be obtained by catching fish and getting experience. The higher rarity the fish, the more experience it will give. A good source of xp is also completing the fishing quests around the game. Although these quests can be quite tedious and is not recommended unless you know exactly where to catch the fish they require.
Fishing Ability –
⦁ You will be able to catch fish at a faster rate.
Items that can increase fishing ability can be specific foods such as –

Exotic Herbal Wine
⦁ Cooking Ingredients: Essence of Liquor x1, Dough x3, Mineral Water x5, Leavening Agent x2
⦁ Item Effects: Fishing Speed +1 for 30 minutes

Aloe Yogurt
⦁ Cooking Ingredients: Aloe x5, Milk x2, Sugar x3, Leavening Agent x3
⦁ Item Effects: Fishing Speed +1 for 30 minutes

Fruit Wine
⦁ Cooking Ingredients: Exotic Herbal Wine x1, (Apple/Grape/Strawberry) x5, Essence of Liquor x3, Mineral Water x2
⦁ Item Effects: Fishing Speed +1 for 60 minutes

For a full list of cooking consumables have a look at our recipe list
Paste bait is also another way to increase your fishing ability. Paste bait is a very short term method as the effect only lasts for a few minutes. Although effective, Paste Bait only provides a boost for a very short period of time compared with general food. Also, Paste Bait can only be obtained through the loyalty store (merit points for logging in every day) and quest rewards.

Paste Bait
⦁ Fishing Ability +2
⦁ Duration: 5 minutes

High Quality Paste Bait
⦁ Fishing Ability +3
⦁ Duration: 5 minutes

Some fishing rods also provide bonuses such as the Thick, Steel and Golden Rods.

SELLING YOUR FISH

Fish are sold to the Trade Managers around Black Desert. These are the traders that sell and buy trade goods and are noted on the map as a small wheel cart. You can find the nearest one by clicking on the NFC finder utility to the top left of your minimap. Fish work just the same as your usual hand-in item only with an expiry date.

For maximum profit you would ideally want to sell your fish to the Trade Manager that is the furthest away from the origin of your fish. For each node between the origin of the fish is a ~3% price increase. But remember that you can only sell to Trade Managers in nodes that you have contributed to. If you are unfamiliar to nodes and contribution have a look at our node guide.
To identify the origin of your fish, just mouse over the fish in your inventory and have a look under the expiry time. It should identify where the origin of the fish is.
NOTE: You must have contributed to the node that the fish originated from and the node that the fish is being sold to for maximum price. If not you would only receive 30% of the fish price.

HOTSPOT FISHING

Hotspot fishing is one of the ways you can approach fishing in Black Desert. Hotspot fishing requires you to have a boat, preferably a “Fishing Boat” as it’s the fastest ship in the game. Boats are essential as these hotspots are dynamic and move every 30 minutes. To get a boat you can either buy it off the player marketplace or craft it yourself. For more information on boats have a look at our ships guide.
These hotspots are indicated by a school of fish jumping out of the water with seagulls surrounding it. If you are fishing inland on a river or lake you will only see the school of fish jumping out of the water.

hotspot
These hotspots will only give you yellow and depending on the type of hotspot orange fish. If correctly executed, these spots can be highly profitable. There is also a chance you can catch multiple fish with one cast on a standard fishing rod. If you hold down “spacebar” and invest energy into your cast. With a maximum of 10 energy points you can roll for a chance to catch multiple fish. If you combined this method with a Triple-Float Fishing Rod you have a chance to obtain 5 fish in one cast! Later on in the “Advanced Techniques” section we will discuss on some tips and tricks to maximise your profits while fishing with these hotspots.

AFK FISHING

Away from keyboard fishing is quite useful when you don’t have much time and can only come back every so often to play Black Desert. To activate this feature just select “Throw away useless items caught during auto-fishing” when waiting for a bite. Once checked your character will fish by itself. Once there is a bite your character will automatically reel in the fish after 3 minutes and recast once the fish has been collected.

afk
To reduce your system load due to having Black Desert running all the time you can close the game to tray. This is when the game runs as a background process but does not load your graphics card. Useful if you like to have your power bills under control. You can do this by pressing “Esc (default)” > “Disconnect” > “End Game” with “Send to tray when quitting” checked (this only works when the game is in windowed or windowed fullscreen mode).
Be aware that some spots are better than others when fishing in Black Desert. One spot may give you mostly fish bones and seaweed where as other might provide blue/green fish. A good indication if somewhere is has good fish is if there are multiple people fishing there at once. Otherwise you will have to go and look for a spot yourself. A general rule for AFK fishing is that the further out you are from the shore, the less trash you are likely to get. If you are interested in maximising your profits and experience through AFK fishing have a look at the “Advanced Techniques” section of the guide.

ADVANCED TECHNIQUES

This section is for players who want to get the most out of their fishing and will be focusing on the smaller details within Black Desert’s fishing mechanics.
Dynamic Hotspot Fishing:
First let’s start with the “Seagull Hotspots” that randomly spawn around Black Desert. Some claim the spawn for these seagull hotspots to be random and other say they are fixed but in reality it doesn’t matter. As the probability of one spawning in the exact same place is very small and infrequent we might as well call them random. But what’s important is the density of which these spawn in. There are some areas where seagull hotspots seem to spawn more often than others, personally I have found areas around Olivia Coast, Epheria Sea and just under Iliya island to be the most active.
Places to avoid out of personal experience would be the seas near Susan Island. For some reason the Mediah seas do not to have many if any hotspots. Multiple times I have sailed the area around there to find no action.

density map

Above is an example map of areas to scout. Red is not preferred, orange is decent and green is preferred. There are a few things that you have to think about when you go actively fishing –

Hotspot fish density
⦁ You want to scout an area where there is enough hotspots to go around so that you don’t have to spend hours looking for one. Every second you spend looking for a spot you are losing money.

Distance to closest repair/warehouse
⦁ If you like to use a special fishing rod that you can repair, you have to consider the distance you need to travel back to repair your rod.
⦁ If you have a small inventory and low weight limit you may have to consider fishing somewhere not too far from a warehouse.

Distance bonus when trading fish
⦁ You want to have the highest distance bonus when selling your fish for extra profits.

Fishing boat efficiency
⦁ Buying new fishing boats when your old one runs out of durability is expensive if done regularly.

You have to take all these conditions into account when devising your fishing route.

Olivia Coast Rotation –

rotation

For any average player with the default weight limit and inventory space I would recommend getting some Epheria Fishing Rods and enchant them to around 90 – 100 durability. Then sail over to the Oliva Sea to look for hotspots. The reason why Olivia Seas is so great is that there is a trader that originates on Louruve Island. Although the fish you catch originate on the Oliva Coast node. This node is not an island but on the mainland. But since you sell at the trade manager on Louruve Island then you get a sweet ~25% distance bonus on your fish. To better understand this, have a look at the map below.

oliva 25%

Once your weight limit is reached you can either boat your way back to Velia/Epheria or park a horse on the coast ready so you don’t have to waste your fishing boats durability to the warehouse/repair.
Keep in mind that the higher your fishing skill, the more hotspots you see. It may be wise to have a fishing buddy that is one or two tiers higher than you in fishing.

Coelacanth Hunting –
Coelacanth is an orange fish that is worth 125,000 silver that you can catch in specific hotspots. Generally these hotspots only last for as long as you catch a Colacanth. I can say with confidence that these Coelacanth spots spawn close to the ports of Velia, Epheria and Altinova. If you ever see a hotspot within the harbours of any of these cities, it’s safe to say that there is a very high chance of catching a Coelacanth.

coael

When in the orange areas, always try to use all 10 energy and if possible with a Triple – Float Rod as you may be able to catch multiple Coelacanths with one cast. You only get to fish once before the spot disappears so make sure you are the first one to catch it.
Effective Scouting –
The best way to scout for hotspots is having thwo fisherman actively fishing together on the same boat. The fisherman with the lower fishing skill captains the boat where the other fisherman sits down and goes into “Observe Mode”. To get into this you must have your weapon sheathed and black into the side of the boat with “S” (default). Then press “R” to enter the observe mode. In this mode you can zoom around as a spectator and have a better view of the ocean.
AFK Static Hotspot Fishing –
There is not much to AFK fishing, but there are two important things to consider.
⦁ The quality of the spot you are fishing at.
⦁ The distance to the nearest warehouse and/or repair facility.
Depending on how much time you want to spend between AFK sessions selling fish and repairing then you may or may not need to be close to a town. A general rule of thumb is that the further away you are from the shore, the less trash you will catch. This seems to be true except for some special exceptions. These exceptions are random “static hotspots” that are located on or close to the shore. A good example of this would be one of the fishing hotspots around Velia.
There is no way to identify these hotspots from general fishing besides dropping your line and seeing what fish is caught. I would recommend asking friends or the internet to see if anyone was kind enough to share a fishing hotspot they discovered. Keep in mind that you have plenty of rods to choose from. Pick a rod that is most suitable for your AFK fishing method.

@Midoriwicca Thanks for pointing it out! I’ll try get that fixed.

  • Oct 16, 2016 @ 22:37 pm

@Scorpion The lifespan of the boat does not increase with the DP you have on the boat. It’s the same for every same type of boat regardless if it’s equipped or not.

Gide is really compleat.. but it have a little mistake…
3rd Sea Node is not conected with 4th in th image… yo have to travel to the “UP” node and take it, THEN you can continue aquiring nodes as the gide said…
You must to know that you´re going to spend 7 contributions points at all.
^^!! I hope this will be useful.

I have a question I cannot find answer to. The fishing boat degrades how just by usage (movement)? Also if you have high dps on the boat does it degrade slower?

  • Aug 1, 2016 @ 1:26 am

Thanks, David! I’ll be sure to edit that in.

“You can do this by pressing “Esc (default)” > “Disconnect” > “End Game” with “Send to tray when quitting” checked.”

I believe this only works if you are NOT in fullscreen mode. E.G. Fullscreen Windowed, or Windowed, then the option to send to tray is available.

    Thank you 🙂

  • Mar 12, 2016 @ 1:14 am

Yes. To repair a rod you just need to go to a blacksmith and repair like any other piece of equipment.

  • Mar 12, 2016 @ 0:06 am

The rods that can be repaired, can they be repaired like the normal items e.g. by going to a Blacksmith and clicking on the repair icon?
Or is there something special needed for them to get repaired?
